Dread Wood book summary

When classmates, who are not friends, are forced to go to school on a Saturday, they think things can’t get much worse. Unfortunately, they are wrong and things start to get seriously scary. What dragged their teacher underground? Why do the creepy caretakers keep humming Itsy Bitsy Spider? What exactly is lurking in the shadows? As they’re cut off from the rest of the world and put in danger every time they touch the ground, their only hope is to work together. It doesn’t take them long that it is no coincidence they all wound up in detention.

Someone is out for revenge.

What I thought

I want to thank Jennifer Killick and The Write Reads for the opportunity to read and review Dread Wood. To be honest I didn’t really start reading Middle-Grade Books again until I read The Beast and the Bethany. I assumed I was too old for them and more than likely wouldn’t like them. I’m so glad that I decided to pick more middle-grade books because they have completely changed my view.

So, I picked up Dread Wood because I love horror. R.L. Stine and horror is something I grew up with and I have kind of stuck with it. I’m glad I joined in with this tour because it really does remind me of Goosebumps and the style of R.L. Stine. The story is fast-paced and really makes you want to know what was going to happen next. Jennifer does an absolutely great job with the pacing and managed to keep me interested even though some of the slower parts.

I have to admit that Jennifer does a great job with all of the characters. I think all of the characters really stand out from each other instead of blending like the problem with a lot of other books. They are relatable despite being more for a younger audience. They were funny and such awesome characters. Even though the teacher had a small part I couldn’t help but find if funny that he was trying to be “cool”.

Dread Wood is a five-star read for me and I really hope we get a chance to read the next book!
